Authentic and powerful branding demands the Truth. The future is about market depth and involvement, not market width and awareness. Communicated with clarity both internally within the organisation and then externally to customers ultimately means treating your customers as you would have them treat you. It means removing the illusion of separation, understanding that you are your customer.
BJ Cunningham is a Visiting Professor at Brighton University, a member of the Super Brands Council and an internationally renowned Key Note speaker.
He uses his own experience as a serial entrepreneur to illustrate his straightforward brand and business thinking, where he advocates the philosophy of ‘Right Thought, Right Word, Right Action’: Know what you are trying to say, say it clearly and then do what you said you were going to do when you said you were going to do it.
BJ uses his experience of establishing the Enlightened Tobacco Company PLC, and then marketing a brand of cigarettes called ‘DEATH’ as ‘the honest smoke’ as a highly entertaining and thought provoking case study. His act of heresy, though enormously successful with consumers, didn’t go down at all well with the tobacco industry. It eventually landed him in the European Court of Justice fighting against not only every Member State of Europe but also the might of the established tobacco industry.
This presentation demonstrates how BJ puts his philosophy into effect in his own companies and the out-of-the-box thinking that a strong brand concept can drive.

Corporate Training Goes Virtual: A Hybrid Approach to Experiential Learning

Millennials see the world through a digital lens. They often appear to be more comfortable interacting with a colleague’s Facebook page or virtual world avatar than conversing in face-to-face situations. Can traditional “chalk and talk” corporate training techniques accommodate learners who have grown up holding a mouse or joystick rather than a pencil. Forward-thinking organizations from IBM to the U.S. Army already are experimenting with new 3D immersive learning platforms that synchronize with the dynamic recreational environments in which young people immerse themselves every day.
Virtual environments hold tremendous promise for corporate training, but they are not a panacea. Nor is it likely that they will entirely replace traditional in-person techniques (at least in the near future). To reflect this reality, we advocate a hybrid approach to curriculum development that “cherry-picks” the best aspects of each domain for content- and experience-based learning. We will review several applications developed for companies to assist in sales training, internal corporate communications and customer insights research.
